SHOW REPORT FOR 2017
WORTHING'S VILLAGE SHOW
On Saturday, 12th August, we held our 40th Annual Horticultural Show, known as “The Great Village Show”, for the seventh time at Oak Grove College. For gardeners this has been another difficult year with a cold windy spring and low rainfall but the members came up trumps again. The hall looked sensational, with so much glorious fruit, vegetables, flowers and cookery on display. Outside, in the gardens, there were stalls selling all manner of things including allotment produce, tools, homemade cakes, plants and crafts. Our Beekeepers John and Sarah Scrace were there, explaining the wonderful world of bees and selling glorious honey produced on the Allotment Site. People sat around enjoying tea and cake, bangers and burgers, and soaking up the sun shine and the warm friendly atmosphere or walking around the College’s award winning gardens. This is such a lovely place to spend an afternoon and the weather was perfect. The event was well attended and proved to be another very successful show at Oak Grove. This event has developed into such a friendly occasion as well as a chance for members to show off the results of a year's hard work.
On the competitive side there were exhibits of a very high standard, some very large, some very small and flowers to die for, and it was so pleasing to see newcomers taking part and picking up awards alongside the experienced showmen.
Heather Broad had a good afternoon winning Most Points and Best exhibit in the Flower Section, and overall Best Exhibit in Show. Bob Bingham scored the most points in the Vegetable Section and won the RHS Banksian Medal while Peter Hannam won Best Exhibit in the Fruit Section and Pearl Morgan had Best Exhibit of Vegetables. Celia Powis won the Cookery Cup and the Rose Bowl and I had the Best Collection of Vegetables. Tony Payne won Master Gardener and Betty Scott the Wine Cup. Frank Di Chello won The Best Allotment award, David Newnham Most Improved Allotment and Best Front Garden went to Tina Russell. In the novice section Tony Sankey won Most Points and Allen Brooks Best Exhibit. In the children’s section Finlay Austin won Best Exhibit for his painting of butterflies and the most points trophy went to Ruby North.
The lasting memory of the afternoon was the very friendly atmosphere everywhere, with so many happy people enjoying themselves. I must also say a huge thank you to the wonderful team of volunteers who set up on Friday, made everything happen on Saturday afternoon and then like magic cleared it all away. Finally, with all the costings in, I am sure our Treasurer will be a happy man!
Congratulations to you all. Well done.
